Johnnie Mac Reviews   02-02-2008

Song : Nicotine Dream     Rating: 4/5

I don't need to say what the song sounds like, Johnnie's description above does the job. There is a solid old school punk vibe here with the thumping chords. It sounds like Mr Mac is having a lot of fun with this song which translates into a very enjoyable song that is full of energy and is really catchy!

Lixivius was formed in 1996 with Johnnie Mac on lead guitar and vocals.  Their EP 'Dance the Dance' was recorded in March 1999 at the infamous Albert Studio in Sydney and produced by Ian Miller, legendary rock n roll guitarist with the John Paul Young band and producer of a string of hit singles throughout the late 60's and early 70's.

The name Lixivius was one that popped up literally everywhere around Sydney… on sound desks, posters, and lavs in venues from the Bat and Ball, Excelsior, Annandale, Hopetoun to the Hard Rock Cafe. This band was obviously doing something right to be getting gigs in all these venues, and when you finally did catch up with them you we’re greeted by two guys, three girls and a rather eclectic show that included guitars, drums, sax and a didge!

Sadly, LiXiViUS are no longer playing live.

Why This Name?
A thesaurus and a bottle of red....the rest we completely made up. It was better than Fenugreek's worth, anyway! (at the time we were obsessed with all of the things Fenugreek can do for a battered body...we were pretty into battering our bodies, obviously).

Do You Play Live?
Sadly, we are dispersed to the four winds. Willie now lives and works as a journalist in Tokyo, while Jussie has become a yoga teacher in Sydney. Karl has become a surfing bum up on the beautiful north coast of New South Wales, while Johnnie, with his wife, Michelle and a team of legends, have created the Ganngjalah (Place of Learning) Cultural Gardens in Mt Burrell. Rebecca has been spending too much time on boats in New Zealand and cannot find her land legs to play.

Would You Sign A Record Contract With A Major Label?
In principle, no. In reality, yes. However, we would never sign away our publishing! (bands, be warned!)

Band History:
Oh, man! How much time do you have?

OK, well, Willie and Jussie are sisters, so they met first. Willie then met Johnnie - he was her bush regeneration teacher in the Blue Mountains, Australia, of all things!  Johnnie is THE bush man, the legend! He is also a punk rocker, which we love and respect! They started to play a bit of music together, but how a band formed is anyone's guess. Rebecca and Jussie had been living together in New Zealand, then Willie, Jussie and Bec all lived together in Sydney when the seeds of LiXiViUS were planted. Karl "Sheepy" Johnson joined the group on the drums (he was also playing in a band with Willie's boyfriend at the time - "we saw him play once and kept trying to steal him until he gave in!  We finally took out a time share on Karl with about a gazillion other bands, but hey, he was worth it!).

Influences?
Hmmm, this one is tough! People used to ask us this all the time and we could never really answer...let's see...ROCK, ROLL, GUITARS, DRUMS, SINGING, BEER SWILLING....you get the picture...

Actually, it's a little moodier than that!

Think of PJ Harvey and the Buzzcocks, who have sat down to write a song together with acoustic guitars...

Favorite Place?
Mt Burrell Cultural Gardens, Kamakura (outside Tokyo...in fact, anywhere outside Tokyo unless it's Saturday night and a good band's playing), the Blue Mountains (Australia), Cambodia and the South Island of NZ!

Equipment Used:
Mini hurdy gurdy...

Anything Else...?
This goes out to all of the people who came to our shows and danced! (and bought us beer...)  We love you!
